Ch.2 Living Things And Cells Flashcards
BIOLOGY
Is the study of living things.
ORGANISM
Living things
MRSFERG
M - movement
R - respiration
S - sensitivity
F - feeding
E - Excretion
R - reproduction
G - growth
MOVEMENT
Animals can move from place to place.
Plants do not move from place to place, the move when they grow or when a flower closes or opens its petals.
RESPIRATION
It’s the way living things get energy. They take oxygen and mix it with food to get energy.
SENSITIVITY
It’s the ability to react to changes in the environment. Animals will run away from danger, a plant will grow towards light.
FEEDING
Animals do not make their own food, they get food from eating plants and other animals.
Plants make their own food.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
This is the word for how plants make food. They need a greed dye called chlorophyll. This is why plants are green.
EXCRETION
Is the removal of waste made in the body, from the body. Animals excrete carbon dioxide, water, urea and salts.
REPRODUCTION
Is being able to make new individuals of the same kind.
GROWTH
Results from cell division.
Cell membrane -
Very thin layer that surrounds the cell. Holds cell contents in place and controls what passes into and out of the cell.
Nucleus -
Is normally round. It acts as the control centre of the cell. It has DNA.
Cytoplasm -
The watery liquid found between the nucleus and the cell membrane.
Mitochondria -
.
Supply energy to the cell.
