Ch.2 Landscapes in our Environment Flashcards
How many spheres do we have?
4
What are the 4 spheres?
Biosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Lithosphere.
What is the lithosphere?
It is the outer part/ crust of the earth.
What is the pedosphere?
It is the upper most part of the lithosphere and helps with soil formation processes.
How does the atmosphere help with soil formation?
The atmosphere provides the land with different pressures and different temperatures to create different soil formations.
What do landscapes consist of?
Landscapes consist of various geographic features that are characteristics of an area.
What are the two categories of landscapes?
Natural and Human
What are the two categories that divide natural landscapes?
Endogenic and Exogenic.
Briefly explain endogenic and exogenic forces.
Endogenic forces are caused by the internal heat of the core and result in the horizontal movement of the earth. They are also called constructive forces because they construct new formations on the earth’s surface, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain formations.
Exogenic forces arise due to the atmosphere of the Earth. They are also called destructive forces as they are likely to destroy other landforms. Ex. weathering, erosion, hail damage, tornados etc.
What are the 7 physiographic regions of Canada
Arctic lands, Canadian shield, Appalachian region, St. Lowrance low lands, Interior plains, Cordillera, Hudsons Bay lowlands.
What was the Laurentide ice sheet?
It was the glacier that covered most of Canada. It was about 4km thick.
How did the interior plains benefit from erosion from the great canadian shield?
As the great Canadian Shield eroded, The sediments from that erossion would wash off to the interior plains making the soil rich for agriculture.
When was Laurentide ice sheet formed?
2.6 million years ago.
What lake was created as a result of Laurentide ice sheet?
Glacial lake Agassiz
For how long did lake Agassiz stay?
about 5000 years
