Ch.6 Integumentary System Flashcards
One of the largest and most extensive organs in the body
The Integument
Waterproof shield composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Epidermis
Underlying tough layer made of connective tissue
Dermis (Corium)
Third layer found below the dermis, primarily adipose tissue
Hypodermis (Subcutaneous)
Produce keratin to provide skin resiliency and strength
Keratinocyte
Melanin pigment production to protect keratinocytes from UV rays
Melanocyte
Found at the epidermal-dermal junction
Merkel Cell
Horny, outermost layer that makes up 1/2 total epidermis thickness
Stratum Corneum
Clear Layer, only found in thick skin
Stratum Lucidum
Middle later of skin composed of 2-4 layers of flattened keratinocytes
Stratum Granulosum
Several layers of cells held together by desmosomes, Spiny Layer
Stratum Spinosum
Deepest layer that consists of a single row of keratinocytes, basal layer
Stratum Germinativum
Stratum Corneum
Stratum Spinosum
Stratum Basale
The 3 Epidermal layers
Greatest portion of integument = the “Hide”
Dermis
The 2 Dermis layers
1.Papillary and 2.Reticular Layer
Thin, Superficial layer that lies just below the epidermis
Papillary Layer
