Ch.6 Integumentary System Flashcards
One of the largest and most extensive organs in the body
The Integument
Waterproof shield composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Epidermis
Underlying tough layer made of connective tissue
Dermis (Corium)
Third layer found below the dermis, primarily adipose tissue
Hypodermis (Subcutaneous)
Produce keratin to provide skin resiliency and strength
Keratinocyte
Melanin pigment production to protect keratinocytes from UV rays
Melanocyte
Found at the epidermal-dermal junction
Merkel Cell
Horny, outermost layer that makes up 1/2 total epidermis thickness
Stratum Corneum
Clear Layer, only found in thick skin
Stratum Lucidum
Middle later of skin composed of 2-4 layers of flattened keratinocytes
Stratum Granulosum
Several layers of cells held together by desmosomes, Spiny Layer
Stratum Spinosum
Deepest layer that consists of a single row of keratinocytes, basal layer
Stratum Germinativum
Stratum Corneum
Stratum Spinosum
Stratum Basale
The 3 Epidermal layers
Greatest portion of integument = the “Hide”
Dermis
The 2 Dermis layers
1.Papillary and 2.Reticular Layer
Thin, Superficial layer that lies just below the epidermis
Papillary Layer
80% of the dermis
Reticular Layer
Tough, thick layers of fat and connective tissue
Paw Pads
Top of nose in cats, pigs, sheep, and dogs
Planum Nasale
Dark, Horny structures on legs of equine family
Ergots and Chestnuts
Maintains body temperature by trapping insulating layers of air
Hair
Part of hair visible above skin
Hair Shaft
Anchors Hair
Follicle
Up to 15 hairs may be associated with one
Pore
Small, smooth muscle attached to every hair follicle
Arrector Pili
Oil Glands are
Sebaceous Glands
Part of hair buried below skin
Hair Root
Rapidly dividing epithelial cells that cover the papilla
Matrix
Mound of dermal cells at base of bulb
Papilla
Web of sensory endings that envelops the root
Root hair plexus
Innermost central core
Medulla
Surrounds medulla
Cortex
Single cell layer hair surface composed of keratin
Cuticle
Yellowish and reddish colors in dogs
Pheomelanin
Brown-black colors in dogs
Tyrosine Melanin
Reservoir for malodorous secretions
Anal Sacs
Hard outer coverings of distal digits, no retractable except in most cats
Claws
Evoluntionary remnants of digits
Dewclaws
Horny outer covering of digits of some animals
Hoof = Ungula
Mass of horny keratin
Horns
