Ch15: Airport & Routes Flashcards
Category A Airport
A Category A airport is an airport that is approved for all operations and can be utilised as a Destination, Alternate, Adequate or Emergency airport.
A Category A airport will have at least, the minimum equipment/manpower required to refuel and dispatch an aircraft without Engineering support.
Category B Airport
Meets Category A requirements but has additional considerations - operational, environmental or commercial (RMS).
Approved for all operations and can be utilised as a Destination, Alternate, Adequate or Emergency airport, unless otherwise notated in the RMS.
Carefully check Category B airport constraints when considering use for a diversion. Some Category B airports have restrictions on use as an alternate/diversion port and/or for medical emergencies.
Category C Airport
AACET
- Not Category A or B airport but is required for flight planning purposes
- Approved for utilisation as:
• Acceptable airport; or
• Adequate airport and as such, an EDTO Alternate; or
• Charter Destination; or
• Emergency airport; or
• Takeoff Alternate.
Physical Requirements of a CAT C Airport
LSTA
• LDA not < LDR (factored).
• Surface and strength of the manoeuvring area must allow the aircraft to land without the likelihood of:
• Damage to the aircraft; or
• Airport being rendered unusable for other operation.
• Taxiways and apron areas must allow the aircraft to park so that it is clear of the remaining movement areas and does not render the airport unusable for other operations; and
• Airport lighting must be as set out in AIP Enroute under the heading ‘Suitability of Aerodromes’.
Category D Airport
-
Emergency only.
• When used for (DPD), must satisfy the Acceptable airport requirements
• Can be utilised as a Takeoff Alternate
• Cannot be planned as a Destination, Alternate or Adequate airport hence Category D airports are not applicable or considered for EDTO.
Acceptable Airport
Category A, B, C or D airport which at the time of departure:
• Is forecast to be above Landing minima for the period of intended use; or
• Appropriate holding fuel included due to Weather, Navaid availability, etc.
• Acceptable airports are used for DPD calculation
Adequate Airport
- Category A, B or C airport which meets the CASR requirements, including availability of forecasts and services.
- Used for takeoff Alternate planning.
- Used in supporting EDTO operations.
- If the relevant requirements of the CASR and MOS 121 are met, then the airport may be utilised as an Enroute Alternate
Available Airport
An Available airport is any airport, which in the judgment of the Captain, is appropriate for landing in terms of weather, airport conditions and runway length, at the time of the intended landing.

Category A,B &C airports (Utilisation)
Used for all airports except following conditions for C
I) departure airport requires IOC and Chief Pilot approval
II) destination airport for charter only
