Ch13 Microscopic Contents Of Urine Flashcards
Hardened proteins and cells which can form plugs in the shape of the distal convoluted renal tubule, or collecting duct
Form in very acidic urine or when urine is very concentrated
Casts
Result from a sloughing off of epithelium from the lining of the urinary tract and the filtrate
Cells
Presence of cells may indicate inflammation or a urinary disease
When minerals crystallize in the urine
May indicate kidney stones
Crystals
Rough cuboidal CELLS which slough off from the lining of the uterus, urinary bladder, and renal pelvis of the kidneys
Transitional epithelial cells
Flat nucleated CELLS which slough off from the lining of the urethra
Squamous epithelial cells
Red blood CELLS found in the urine, the presence may indicate some kind of kidney damage
Erythrocytes
Nucleated white blood CELLS, the presence may indicate a urinary tract infection
Leukocytes
This CAST is a precipitate of red blood cells in the shape of a tubule or duct
Erythrocyte cast
This CAST is a precipitate of white blood cells in the shape of a tubule or duct
Leukocyte cast
The CAST is a precipitate of cells which remained in the duct but degenerated into a granular cast
Granular cast
This CAST is composed of RBCs, WBCs, and oval fat droplets
Hyaline casts
Greenish crystals usually in the shape of an octahedron (polygon with eight sides)
Calcium oxalate
Yellow to reddish-brown crystals, highly polymorphic in shape
Uric acid
Crystals have various forms including eight-sided prisms appearing in single or a rosette shape
Calcium phosphate
