the capacity of a person, team, or organization to keep a more powerful person or group in the exchange relationship.

- The potential to change a behaviour or attitude
- There is a perception of power
- Dependence of one party on another (this is not equal)

reward power:
control rewards valued by others, and to remove negative sanctions

referent power
- capacity to influence others identification with and respect for the power holder
- associated with charisma (a personal characteristic or ‘gift’ that serves as a form of interpersonal attraction and referent power over others
