CH10 : Equilibrium Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium ?
IN CLOSED SYSTEM
The rate of backward reaction = rate of forward reaction
The concs of reactants/products are constant
What is a closed system?
Nothing can get it/out
What is Kc?
The equilibrium constant - give an idea of how far to the left/right the equilibrium is
- calculated using the concs of reactants and products in system
What is a homogenous/heterogenous system ?
HOMOGENOUS : System in which everything is in same physical state
HETEROGENOUS: system where not all reactants/products in same physical state
- solids/pure liquids ignored from Kc calculation bc their concs stay constant in reaction
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
if a change is made to a system in dynamic equilibrium, the position of the equilibrium moves to counteract this change
Reasons for compromises made by companies to get high yield/reaction rate?
Financial/profit - is cost of altered reaction worth it?
Energy/environment - will altering reaction have effect in energy needed/environemental impact?
Health/safety - is it safe to alter reaction?
Role of catalyst?
Increases rate at which reaction moves towards equilibrium
- provides alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy
When does Kc value change?
If temp of reaction changes
