What is history
The study of the past
What is a source
Something that hives us information or evidence about a person, place or thing in the past
What is prehistory
The period of time before writing was used
What is archaeology
The study of remains left by people in the past
Why do we study history
-learn how people lived before us
-gain an understanding of the causes and effects of past events
-understand how human experience shaped our world today
-learn the recognise patterns of change
What is historical consciousness
Being able to place ourselves in past human experiences, linking the past, the present and the future
Whats a historian
Someone who is an expert in, or a student of history
Whats an archaeologist
Someone who investigates places and objects left by people in the past, including prehistory
What is cross checking
When more than one source is used to make sure the information is correct
Whats a historical repository
A place where evidence of the past can be stored and maintained, for example artefacts, gov docs, manuscripts or photographs
Whats an archive
A place that catalogues and stores a collection of written and other sources
Whats a museum
A place that collects and displays objects for public education and appreciation
Whats a primary source
Source from the time in question; a first hand account of what happened
Whats a secondary source
Source from a later date, after the time in question
Whats an artefact
Any human made object
Whats a census
Official survey of a population
Whats an autobiography
An account of a persons life written by the person
Whats a biography
An account of a persons life written by someone else
Whats a handling box
A box containing replicas of artefacts, so anyone can examine them without damaging an original
What is accuracy
Judging how correct the information you are using is
What is bias
When an account is not balanced, but fairly favours one side
What is exaggeration?
When something is represented as better or worse than it actually was.
What is propaganda
Information that has been designed to influence the attitude and behaviours of the general public.
Types pf sources: tactile sources
A source that can be touched -a physical object like an artefact
What is chronology
Events are put into the sequence in which they happened
What is reinterpretation
Tosee something in a new or different light
