Ch1 Parts of Ecosystem Flashcards
ecosystem
made up of all living and nonliving things that interact in an area
What are some nonliving parts of an ecosystem?
- light
- water
- temperature
- soil
example would be a forest and a polar region, the temperature is quite different and will determine what can live in each ecosystem
Forest ecosystem
- light
- air
- water
- shade
- soil
Polar ecosystem
- all soil covered by ice
- temperatures are very low
- half of the year there is little or no sunlight
- animals survive with layers of fat and thick fur
Desert ecosystem
- daytime temperatures are very high
- little rainfall
- soil is sandy and has few nutrients
- plants and animals adapt to these conditions
- many desert animals are active only at night when temperatures are lower
organism
living thing
energy
ability to cause change
What do living things depend on to live?
basic needs:
- all organisms need a source of energy
- oxygen
- shelter
- water
reproduce
making more organisms of their own kind
life process
- take in nutrients
- grow and develop
- release energy
- react to their surroundings
- gives off waste
- reproduce
temperate zone
an area of the Earth that rarely gets hot or cold
environment
everything that surrounds and affects an organism
community
all organisms in an ecosystem
population
all the members of one kind of plant or animal in a community
rainforest
an ecosystem where it rains a lot
desert
a dry ecosystem with sandy soil
chaparral
an ecosystem that has wet mild winters but extremely hot, dry summers
taiga
an ecosystem that is very cold
coral reef
a type of ecosystem found in warm, tropical salt water and built on a structure of coral deposits
What is the relationship between living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem?
The different temperatures of those nonliving things (water, sunlight, soil, and air) are quite different and determine what can live in each ecosystem.
Fire is a normal part of the chaparral ecosystem because
Lightning strikes can ignite chaparral plants.
All of the organisms of an ecosystem make up a
community
All the members of one kind of plant or animal in a community make up a
population
Write the four land ecosystes, their climate, location, plants and animals
Land Ecosystems:
1. Rainforest
- climate: sunny and warm
- location: near Earth’s equator
- plants & animals: birds, monkey and tree frogs.
2. Chaparral
- climate: wet, mild winters & extremely hot, dry
summers
- location: California, South America Eurasia, Africa
- plants & animals: shrubby, fire-resistant oaks, pines,
and brush
3. Desert
- climate: dry, temperatures are very high
- location: American West, Africa, Middle East, Asia,
South America, and Australia
- plants: cactus, desert tortoise, roadrunner
4. Taiga
- climate: very cold, winters are extremely long, cold and
severe
- location: northern part of North America and Eurasia
- plants & animals: pines, firs and spruce trees, moose,
deer and wolves
