Q

What are some nonliving parts of an ecosystem?

A
  1. light
  2. water
  3. temperature
  4. soil
example would be a forest and a polar region, the temperature is quite different and will determine what can live in each ecosystem

Q

Polar ecosystem

A
  1. all soil covered by ice
  2. temperatures are very low
  3. half of the year there is little or no sunlight
  4. animals survive with layers of fat and thick fur

Q

Desert ecosystem

A
  1. daytime temperatures are very high
  2. little rainfall
  3. soil is sandy and has few nutrients
  4. plants and animals adapt to these conditions
  5. many desert animals are active only at night when temperatures are lower

Q

What do living things depend on to live?

A

basic needs:

  1. all organisms need a source of energy
  2. oxygen
  3. shelter
  4. water

Q

desert

A

a dry ecosystem with sandy soil

17
Q

chaparral

A

an ecosystem that has wet mild winters but extremely hot, dry summers

18
Q

taiga

A

an ecosystem that is very cold

19
Q

coral reef

A

a type of ecosystem found in warm, tropical salt water and built on a structure of coral deposits

20
Q

What is the relationship between living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem?

A

The different temperatures of those nonliving things (water, sunlight, soil, and air) are quite different and determine what can live in each ecosystem.

21
Q

Fire is a normal part of the chaparral ecosystem because

A

Lightning strikes can ignite chaparral plants.

22
Q

All of the organisms of an ecosystem make up a

23
Q

All the members of one kind of plant or animal in a community make up a

A

population

24
Q

Write the four land ecosystes, their climate, location, plants and animals

A

Land Ecosystems:
1. Rainforest
- climate: sunny and warm
- location: near Earth’s equator
- plants & animals: birds, monkey and tree frogs.
2. Chaparral
- climate: wet, mild winters & extremely hot, dry
summers
- location: California, South America Eurasia, Africa
- plants & animals: shrubby, fire-resistant oaks, pines,
and brush
3. Desert
- climate: dry, temperatures are very high
- location: American West, Africa, Middle East, Asia,
South America, and Australia
- plants: cactus, desert tortoise, roadrunner
4. Taiga
- climate: very cold, winters are extremely long, cold and
severe
- location: northern part of North America and Eurasia
- plants & animals: pines, firs and spruce trees, moose,
deer and wolves

25
Wildfires help some plant seeds open in a
fire.
26
An area where it rarely gets very hot or very cold is a
temperate zone
27
Name 3 types of water ecosystem:
1. salt water - location: warm tropical salt water - plants and animals: corals and algae, marine life 2. freshwater - location: streams, rivers, ponds, lakes - animals: trout, catfish, beavers 3. coral reef
28
Because moose and volves can survive in a very cold, dry environment, they are often found in
Taiga ecosystem
29
One life process is to make more of one's own kind, or
reproduce
30
An ecosystem found in warm, tropical saltwater and built on a structure of coral deposits is a
coral reef
31
An ecosystem with a lot of rain, plenty of sunshine, and warm temperatures is a tropical
rainforest
32
An ecosystem is made up of
all the living and nonliving things that interact in an area
33
To survive, all plants, animals, and other organisms need
water, energy, air
34
Nonliving conditions in a desert are
extremely hot, sunny, and dry all year
35
A tropical rainforest has different organisms than a taiga ecosystem because
its nonliving conditions are different, it has more rain, and it is much warmer
