What is nutrition?
The study of food
- it’s composition, the amounts needed by the body and its effects on the body.
What is “food”?
Food is any substance (solid or liquid) that contains nutrients.
What is “nutrient”?
Any substance that can be digested (broken down) & used by the body.
All nutrients are made up of elements.
What is an “element”?
Is the simplest form of a substance
What is a “balanced diet”?
A diet that contains all of the nutrients in the correct amount for the body’s needs .
What dose RDA stand for?
Recommend dietary allowance.
What dose GDA stand for?
Guideline daily amount
What are micronutrients?
Nutrients required in small amounts (minerals and vitamins)
~measured In milligrams and micrograms
What are macronutrients?
Nutrients required in large amounts (protein, fat and carbohydrates)
~measured in grams
What is composition?
Elements that make up the nutrient & how they are arranged within the nutrient.
Wha is classification?
Divided into groups or classes
What is sources?
Foods that are the best suppliers of the nutrient
What are functions?
How the nutrient is used in the body
