What is a primary source?
Sources that are written/made at the time an event took place
Examples of primary sources
Original buildings, photographs,films,newspapers,letters,books
What is a secondary source?
A source that provides second hand evidence,it was made by someone who didn’t witness the events happening
Examples of secondary sources
Textbooks,history books,reconstructions,artists impressions
What is biased?
One sided
What are the four different sources?
Primary,secondary,written and visual
How do archeologists find out about the past?
Stratigraphy- study of the extra layers of soil (the deeper you go the further into the past it was)
Carbon-14 dating ~ used to tell age of object
Dendrochronology - the study of the rings of a tree trunk
What are the three periods of pre-history?
Stone age, iron age and bronze age
Whats an Aerial photo?
Photos taken from the air
Whats a crop mark?
Its the way the grass and crops if there is an ancient artefact buried underneath
Whats a geophysical survey?
Its the use of metal detectors to pick up objects underground
Whats field walking?
Walking over the site and looking for objects
