Each individual is influenced by more than one set of moral standards, thus morality not static.
3.What four important points do we need to keep in mind within any discussion of morality?
When discussing morality we need to keep in mind personal responsibility, morality being housed in the human will, consequences of moral actions, and the communal dimension of morality
4.What is moral philosophy? On what is it based?
Moral philosophy is defined as a systematic endeavor to understand moral concepts and to justify moral principles and theories. (right vs. wrong) It is based on which values and virtues are central for the overall good of society. It tries to set the correct behavior for individuals and groups.
5.What is moral theology? On what is it based?
Moral theology is defined as the study of what God reveals to humanity about how to live a moral life. It is based on human reason.
6.From the Catholic perspective, what are the two forms of divine revelation, and how are they related?
The two forms of divine revelation are Scripture and the Tradition of the Church. They are related because truths that can not be found in scripture are found in the current revelation of tradition. Scripture and Tradition work together to make the truth known.
7.What is the relationship between faith and reason?
The relationship between faith and reason is Catholic moral theology holds that faith always informs reason.
8.Why is the theme of love so important for the Book of Deuteronomy?
The theme of love is so important for the Book of Deuteronomy because it serves as the foundation for Jesus’ moral teachings. God gives moral laws for peoples best interests.
9.In the Christian Scriptures, what does Jesus mean when he says we are to love one another?
When Jesus says we are to love one another he means we should want good for our neighbors in every circumstance and we should help them reach the good they want to achieve.
10.How does Jesus demonstrate his compassion for the poor and powerless?
Jesus demonstrates his compassion for the poor and powerless by socializing with the people that the community rejects.
11.What models for living a moral life do we find in the Beatitudes?
In the Beatitudes we learn “Blessed our the poor in spirit for their is the kingdom of heaven”. We also learn in oder to be blessed we must want justice, give mercy, be open, and be peacemakers
12.What is the natural law? How does it act as a source for Christian moral reflection?
The natural law is defined as the human participation in God’s eternal law through reason, or the law written on the human heart by God. It acts as a source of Christian moral reflection by helping people recognize the good they must do and the evil they must avoid in their lives.
13.What is a virtue and why are virtues important for the development of good moral character?
A virtue is defined as a disposition of the will by which an individual willingly and consistently chooses to act in a morally good way. Virtues are important for the development of good moral character because the choices a person makes (the virtues) reflects the kind of person somebody is. (moral character)
14.What are the philosophical virtues? What are the theological virtues?
Philosophical virtues can be known through reason. The philosophical virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The theological virtues relate directly to God. The theological virtues are faith, hope, and charity(love
15.For Christians, what is the good? What does it mean “to say that the good that one does in one’s life is a reflection of the goodness that is God?
For Christians, the good is God, understood as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It means God loves everybody unconditionally and every person has the gift of God’s love and grace. (his goodness
16.What does it mean to say that God’s goodness both enables and requires us to be responsible for the goodness of the world?
This means that God gave every individual unique talents and characteristics. As a Christian living a moral life, it is my duty to use the talents I have received from God. God enabled me to have my talent and he requires me to use it
