clinical psych
first used in 1907. originally defined as similar to medicine, education and sociology. APA defines it as “ clinical psych integrates science, theory, and practice to understand, predict, and alleviate maladjustment, disability, and discomfort as well as to promote human adaptation, adjustment and personal development.

prescription privileges, evidence- based practice/ maualized therapy, over expansion of mental disorders, third party payment vs, self- payment, the influence of tech and cybertherapy
DSM revisions
no major differences between DSM 1 and DSM 2 had vague descriptions of each disorder. DSM 3 provided specific diagnostic criteria (lists indicating which symptoms constitute each disorder) and had a multiaxial system (way of cataloguing problems of different kinds on different axes.
assessment of intelligence
Alfred Binet created the first Binet- Simon sccale. it was the first to incorporate a comparison of mental age to chronological age as a measure of intelligence. this yielded the IQ. it is currently known as the stanford- binet intelligence scales.
wechsler- bellevue - test designed specifically for adults. has been revised to the wechsler adult intelligence scale(WAIS)
a childrens version of this test is- wechsler intelligence scale for children (WISC) for very young children he designed the wechsler preschool and primary scale of intelligence (WPPSI)
assessment of personality
rorschach inkblot method- projective personality test. based on the assumption that people project their personality onto ambiguous stimuli.
thematic apperception test (TAT)- depicted people in scenes or situations that could be interpreted in a wide variety of ways.
objective personality tests:
minnesota multiphasic personality inventory (MMPI)- comprehensive personality measure. consisted of 550 t/f statements. responses were compared with those of groups in the standardization sample who represented many diagnostic categories
minnesota multiphasic personality inventory 2- norms were more appropriate in terms of including minorities and other peoplein the standardization sample.
minnesota multiphasic personality inventory- adolescent: for teens.
