Define: Feudalism
The system in the Middle Ages in which the lord owned the land, and all others served him.
Describe the hierarchy during the Middle Ages
Monarch (king/queen)
Church (bishops/priests)
Knights
Peasants (Freemen, Serfs)
Knights had to swear an allegiance to the king- what did knights have to do, and what did they get in return?
Knights promised to fight for the king in exchange for the rights to pieces of land called manors or fiefs.
What is the difference between freemen and serfs?
Freemen were paid for their work, serfs were not paid for their work.
Define: The Manorial System
The system of how life was organized in rural areas: Nobles owned land and lived in Manors, and peasants farmed the land for the nobles
What are the positives and negatives of Town Life during the Middle Ages?
Positives: more freedom, could choose your job, could work for money
Negatives: dirty, rat infested, crowded areas
What are guilds? What are guilds similar to today?
Guilds were an organization of people (journeymen) who controlled the price of goods and services. Guilds are similar to labour unions, today.
What were the 2 main challenges to the feudal system?
1) The Hundred Years War
2) The Black Plague
How did wealth in society begin to change after feudalism started to break down?
Wealth was now controlled by money instead of land. Materialistic items were beginning to become more important.
Which element of worldview describes Christianity in Middle Ages the best?
Beliefs/Religion
Describe the hierarchy for the church community
Pope
Archbishops/Bishops
Priests
Parishioners (Catholics)
Why were cathedrals so important during the Middle Ages?
People’s worldview revolved around religion, and so people were happy to pour time and money into cathedrals
What opportunities were Monks and Nuns given that others may have not received?
They learned how to read and write
