Q

How is a PDO different from a PGI?

A

A PDO is a specific region, smaller area, with tightly defined regulations concerning irrigation, winemaking techniques. A PGI is more lax, allows winemakers to use a variety of grapes in a blend even those that are non-traditional (like a Chardonnay in a wine from rhone)

False. If an old world wine has a PDO label it rarely presents the wine. It counts on the user to know that a Chablis is a Chardonnay.
