Ch 9 - Preflight Procedures Flashcards
Aspects not on checklist to preflight
Spar lines - lateral rivet lines, if plane was under stress would have bubbles, dents, etc. Could indicate internal damage.
Cracked paint or black oxide around rivet. Shows rivet coming lose or getting strained, too tight.
Different logbooks that should be inspected during preflight
Airframe and engine, sometimes propeller and appliances. Record of maintenance, alteration, inspections.
Is the GPS required to be updated? (Ie. navigational database)
IFR - yes
VFR - no. But not recommended to use a moving map in an out of date GPS in and around critical airspace.
FAA Policy for carrying current charts
Policy is to be aware of all information. Not required to have current charts, but should. Could have frequency changes, new obstructions etc.
Why is starting an engine harder in the winter?
- Oil can congeal
- Over prime - excess fuel in cylinder
- Batteries lose effectiveness
- Engine Fire - over prime or backfire in the carburetor
Limitations on holding engine starter
Let cool down 30sec-1min if held for 30 seconds. Excess heat can damage internal starter components.
Considerations for preflight planning - Taxi
- Airport signage, markings and lighting
- Taxi routes, hotspots, review diagram, crossing RW or TW
- NOTAMs and ATIS
- Determine route to where need to go
- Complete as many checklist items before taxi as possible
Three main areas that contribute to runway incursions
- Communication - misunderstanding ATC or not communicating intentions. Not not expect certain instructions, could change at the last minute. Confirmation or expectation bias.
- Lack of understanding of airport signage
- Failure to maintain situational awareness
6 types of airport signs
- Location
- Destination
- Directions
- Mandatory
- Information
- Runway distance remaining
