Ch 9 Futato - Prepositions and Vav Conjunction Flashcards
What is meant by “independent prepositions”?
prepositions that occur as independent words, NOT prefixed
What Hebrew prepositions are almost always written with maqqef?
from book and notes
What are the three inseparable prepositions in Hebrew?
True or False?
The vowel of the inseparable prepositions is always sheva.
False!
The REGULAR vowel is sheva, but it can change to other vowels too.
If a word begins with sheva and a preposition is attached, what vowel will be used in the inseparable preposition?
hireq
If a word begins with a complex sheva, what does the vowel of the inseparable preposition become?
The same as the short vowel in the complex sheva. Example:
Translate:
in/with truth
Translate
like/as a prophet
Translate
to/for the men
What might happen if an inseparable preposition is added to a word beginning with khatef-segol under alef?
The vowel under alef might drop out, and the sheva under the preposition become a tsere.
Translate:
to/for the city
What happens when an inseparable preposition is added to a definite noun?
The “he” of the definite article is dropped and replaced by the consonant of the preposition. Example:
Translate:
like the kingdom
Is the following preposition independent or inseparable?
usually independent before definite nouns
usually inseparable before indefinite nouns
When the following preposition is inseparable, what happens to the nun?
It is assimilated to the following consonant, so the nun is dropped and the following consonant gets a daggesh (unless a gutteral, which cannot take a daggesh, so instead the expected hireq would undergo compensatory lengthening to a tsere).
What are the two types of conjunctions?
coordinating
subordinating
What is the coordinating conjunction in Hebrew?
vav
What is the rule for the vav conjunction becoming a shurreq?
Remember to BuMP the vav (replace vav with shurreq) when the word begins with בּ (B), מּ (M), or פּ (P). Also, vav becomes shurreq if the word begins with a simple sheva.
When is the vav conjunction used?
- to join two subjects
- to join two direct objects
- to join adjectives that describe a single noun (lesson 10)
- to join verbs (will learn more about this later)
The sheva in a particle may become:
1. patakh if…
2. hireq if…
3. hireq-yod if…
4. short vowel if…
5. tsere if…
- if bet, kaf, or lamed added to a definite noun
- if noun starts with sheva
- if noun starts with yod, sheva
- if noun starts with comp. sheva
- if noun begins alef, khatef-segol
