Ch 9 FHR Flashcards
Baseline FHR descriptions
4
- Periodic
- Episodic
- recurrent
- Intermittent
Baseline FHR
Periodic
definition
changes in baseline of FHR in relation to UCs
Baseline FHR
Episodic
definition
changes in baseline of FHR occur independent of UCs
Baseline FHR
Recurrent
Definition
changes in FHR occur in greater than or equal to 50% of contractions in 20 min
Baseline FHR
Intermittent
definition
changes in FHR in less than 50% of contractions in 20 min
Baseline variability descriptions
4
- absent
- minimal
- moderate
- marked
absent baseline variability
definition
amplitude undetectable
minimal baseline variability
amplitude range is visually detectable at 5 bpm or less
moderate baseline variability
definition
Decelerations
4
- early
- variable
- late
- prolonged
Early deceleration
gradual decrease in FHR from baseline, same time as contraction
Variable deceleration
abrupt decrease in FHR, less than 30 seconds, periodic or intermittent
Late deceleration
gradual decrease from baseline taking more than 30 seconds. Nadir at peak of UC, recovers past end of UC. Always periodic
Prolonged deceleration
abrupt or gradual decrease in FHR lasting more than 2 min. Periodic or intermittent.
FHR Tachycardia
Baseline >160 lasting 10 min or longer
FHR bradycardia
Baseline <110 lasting 10 min or longer
UC components and what each mean
4
- frequency (5 or less in 10 min)
- duration (less than 90 secs)
- intensity (subjective)
- resting tone (soft for at least 30 seconds between)
leopold’s maneuvers
4 steps
- situation of infant
- position of fetal back
- presenting part
- pelvic grip-cephalic prominence
standards for intermittent auscultation
- in 1st SOL
- no risk factors
standards for Intermittent EFM

- 1st SOL
Standards for Continuous EFM
- 2nd SOL
- any risk factors
