What are ceramics?
Inorganic metal oxide compounds that require to be heated in order to fuse small particles together.
What is the main purpose of dental prostheses?
to replace missing or damaged tooth structure
What is considered an inlay?
A restoration that is within the crown of the tooth (intracoronal) and does not cover cusps.
What is an onlay?
A restoration that covers/replaces one or more cusps.
What are veneers?
a thin layer of ceramic/composite that is placed on the facial surfaces of teeth.
Describe a glass-based ceramic.
ceramic materials w/ glass (silica) with or without fillers.
Describe a non-glass-based ceramic.
A crystalline-based ceramic with no glass matrix.
What is a all-ceramic restoration?
a ceramic restoration with no metal core.
What is porcelain?
A tooth-colored ceramic material that involves other materials to form a hard glass-like material.
Describe a lithium disilicate ceramic.
a glass-based ceramic w/ lithium disilicate fillers to inc flexural strength.
Describe zirconia.
The strongest ceramic in dentistry and is non-glass.
