What is considered a vital tooth?
A tooth with a living pulp, able to feel temperature changes and electrical stimuli
What is considered to be a non-vital tooth?
A tooth with a no longer living pulp, is not able to transmit temperature changes and electrical stimuli.
What is the walking bleach technique?
A whitening technique in which whitening material is inserted in a nonvital tooth and the patient walks around with it.
What is power whitening?
An in-office procedure that uses strong whitening materials and light to speed up the process.
How does the whitening process occur in the tooth?
Whitening material passes through spaces in the enamel and reaches the dentin where it releases oxygens to oxidize the stains on the dentin.
What are the two main whitening materials?
Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

What type of stains are the most resistant?
Brown/grey stains caused by tetracycline.
What are the 4 common OTC whitening products?
Whitening strips, paint-on whitening pastes, whitening gels in trays, and rinses.
What are some potential side effects of whitening?
Sensitivity, irritation to gingiva/mucosa/throat, soreness in TMJ.
What is enamel microabrasion?
a process where hydrochloric acid is used to remove discolorations in the enamel
