Ch 9 3-D Design Elements Flashcards
Actual time
The duration of an actual temporal event
Ambient light
The quality of light within an entire space or setting
Content
The emotional/intellectual meaning or message of an artwork
Directed light
Localized and focused light such as a spotlight on a singer
Dynamic forms
Forms that imply change
Earthwork
Commonly, an artwork that has been created through the transformation of a natural site into an aesthetic statement
Environmental work
An artwork that must be entered physically
Form
The physical manifestation of an idea, as opposed to the content; the organization/arrangement of visual elements to create a unified design; a 3-D composition/ unit within a 3-D compostion
Freestanding work
An artwork that is self-supporting and is designed to be viewed from all sides
Function
The purpose of a design or the objective that motivates the designer
(Utilitarian or aesthetic)
Geometric forms
3-D forms derived from or suggestive of geometry
Harmony
A pleasing or soothing relationship among colors, shapes, or other design element
Hue
The name of a color that distinguishes it from others and assigns it a position in the visual spectrum
Implied time
The suggested location or duration of an event
Installation
An artwork or design that presents an ensemble of images and objects within a 3-D environment
Intensity
The purity, saturation, or chroma of color
In time design, the power, concentration, and energy with which an action is performed or the quality of observation of an event
Kinetic forms
Forms that actually move
Mass
A solid 3-D form
Mechanical forms
Gears, belts, hoses, and other forms suggestive of machinery
Organic forms
Forms that are derived from nature
Orthographic projection
A drawing system widely used by artists and designers to delineate the top, bottom, & four side views of a 3-D object
Constructed using parallel lines that accurately delineate six surfaces of an object
Plane
A 3-D form that has length and width but minimal thickness
Polyhedra (polyhedrons)
Multifaceted volumes
Positive forms
Areas of physical substance in 3-D design
Primary contours
Colors from which virtually all other colors can be mixed
Red, green, blue, yellow
Reflective
Light that is bounded off a relative surface back into space
Refracted
Light that has been bent as it passes through a prism
Relief
Sculpture in which forms project out from a flat surface (high to low)
Saturation
The purity, chroma, or intensity of color
Sight line
A viewing line that is established by the arrangement of objects within one’s field of vision
A straight line of unimpeded vision
Site-specific
An artwork specifically designed for and installed in a particular place
Space
The area within or around an area of substance
Static forms
Forms that appear to be stable on a preconception
Symbolic color
A color that has been assigned a particular meaning by the members of a society
Temperature
The physical and psychological heat suggested by a color’s hue
Three-quarter work
A physical object that is designed to be viewed from the front and sides only
Translucent
A surface that partially permits the passage of light
Transparent
A surface that permits the passage of light (clear)
Viewing time
The time an audience devotes to watching or exploring an artwork
