How can a speaker change someone’s attitude?
They must influence others to feel more positive or negative about an issue
What is a persuasive presentation?
Where a speakers primary purpose is to advocate some sort of change attitudes beliefs and behaviors
How can the speaker persuade someone to change their beliefs?
Sometimes it can be by providing new information so the audience member re-examined what they thought was true or false it’s much like an informative speech. This is followed by then trying to persuade them to accept a new set of beliefs
How can you change someone’s behaviors?
You must try to motivate your audience to take some kind of action
What is psychological reactance?
The universal tendency to resist change
What is Monroe’s motivated sequence?
An organizational pattern used by people that are interested in persuasion and resistance. It resembles a problem solution pattern.
What are the steps in Monroe’s motivated sequence?
Step one is to gain the audiences attention
Step two is to identify unfulfilled needs
Step three is to propose a solution that satisfies those needs
Step four is to visualize what satisfaction will mean
Step five is to identify specific actions
What are some strategies to help influence your audience?
Conceal your intent. Don’t ask for too much. Avoid inflammatory phrases. Use two sided message with reputation. Inoculate against counter arguments. Keep objections to a minimum. Combine reason with emotion. Use fear appeals when appropriate. The PMS it
What is important to remember when using high fear appeals?
The fear must seem likely and relevant and it must be accompanied by a vehicle for reducing the fear
What are semantic barriers?
Trigger negative feelings or arousals that distract audience members from listening effectively
