The process by which a prescription is submitted electronically to a third-party payer for the pharmacy to be reimbursed for the medication dispensed
Adjudication
A label that provides supplmentary information about proper and safe administration, use, or storage of a medication
Auxiliary Label
Medication kept behind the pharmacy counter that require a pharmacist’s intervention before dispensing to a patient; BTC medications are not considered prescription medcations
Behind-the-Counter medication (BTC)
An alphanumberic number consisting of two letters and seven numbers that is assigned to prescribers authorized by the DEA to prescribe controlled substances.
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number
The computer-to-computer transfer of prescription data between pharmacies, prescribers, and payers
e-Prescribing
A statment required on the labeling of all precription medications: “Federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription”
Federal Legend
The name, dosage form, strength, and quantity of the medication prescribed
Inscription
A medication that does not require a physician’s order to or prescription for the patient to purchase
Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medication
An order for medication issued by a physician, dentist, or other properly licensed practitioner, such as a physician assistant or nurse practitioner
Prescription
The directions on a prescription that explain how the patient is to take the prescribed medications; a latin expression meaning to “write on label”
Signatura ( signa or sig)
The part of the prescription that provids specific instructions to the pharmacist on how to compound the prescriptoin
Subscription
The heading of a prescription, represented by the Latin symbol Rx, meaning “Take thou” or “ you take”; the symbol has come to represent prescription or pharmacy
