Population
Entire group of individuals about which we want info.
Sample
A part of the population from which we collect info.
Sampling Design
Describes exactly how to choose a sample from the population.
Sample Survey
Selects a sample from the population of all individuals we desire info. Base conclusions about population based on sample.
Bad Samples (3)
Convenience Sample, Bias, Voluntary Response Sample
Convenience Sample
A sample where individuals are selected by taking members of population easiest to reach.
Bias
Design is biased if it systematically favours certain outcomes.
Voluntary Response Sample
Consists of people who choose to participate by responding to a broad appeal. Biased b/c people w/ strong opinions most likely to respond.
Simple Random Samples (SRS)
Consists of n individuals from the population chosen in a way that every set of n individuals has an equal chance to be the sample actually selected.
Table of Random Digits
A long string of numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 w/ 2 properties; 1) Each entry equally as likely to be any # & 2)Entries independent of each other.
Inference
Process of drawing conclusions about a population on basis of sample data.
What gives more accurate results?
Larger sample sizes.
Stratified Random Sample
Classify population into groups of similar individuals (called strata). Then choose a separate SRS in each stratum & combine these SRSs to form the full sample.
Cautions about Sample Surveys
Undercoverage, nonresponse, response bias, wording effect

Occurs when some groups in population left out of process of choosing sample
