ch 8 - Canine and Feline Anesthesia Flashcards
In small animals what techniques can be used to help restrain and anesthetize?
general anesthesia, sedation, neuroleptanalgesia, local anesthesia, regional anesthesia
What are things you need to do to prep the patient for surgery?
- assess, prepare, and weigh patient
- determine the protcol (anesthetic agents, doses, routes, sequence of adm.
What is needed to calculate the volume of each drug?
preanesthetic, induction, maintenance, analgesic agents
What equipment is needed to administer drugs to the patient?
scales, syringes, needle, agents, reversal agents, crash cart, controlled substance log
What is needed to place a prepare fluid equipment for a patient?
clippers and scrub, catheters and catheter cap, tape, flush, adm set (extension set), fluids, prepare equip. for endotracheal intubation
When a patient is under anesthesia you must be able to?
- administer agents effectively
- rapidly detect adverse reactions
- quickly recognize and respond to patient needs
The e-tube should be lubricated with _____ before placement.
small amount of sterile water-soluble lubricant or with patient’s saliva
When anesthetic induction is by an IM agent or combination what happens?
- anesthetic depth gradually increases post injection (5 to 20 min)
- gradually decreases after peak effect (30 to 60 min) until agent is metabolized
- once you give injection you have little control over changes in depth or peak effect
What can you do after giving an IM Agent or a combination when there is inadequate depth and excessive depth?
inadequate depth - give additional anesthetic
excessive depth - monitor, support your patient until agent is metabolized, may need a reversal agent (may be too late in the metabolize process)
