Ch 7.1 Flashcards
Parameter
that describes some characteristic of the population
Statistic
that describes some characteristic of a sample
S & P
Statistic comes from Samples
Parameters come from Population
mew vs x bar
mew- parameter, population mean (avg.)
x bar- statistic, sample mean (avg.)
how to remember which is a parameter vs statistic?
greek letters are always the population (parameter) besides 1 exception
p hat vs p?
p hat: statistic, sample proportion
p: parameter, population proportion
Sampling distribution
(of a statistic) distribution of values (graph/list) taken by the statistic in ALL POSSIBLE SAMPLES of SAME size & SAME population
Center unbiased vs biased estimator?
unbiased estimator: if mean (or center) of sampling distribution is equal to the value of the parameter (aka truth) being estimated
-not favoring either side
Spread, what kind of spread do we want in a sampling distribution?
low variability is better!
variability of a statistic
spread of its sampling distribution DETERMINED by the SIZE of the RANDOM SAMPLE (aka sample size)
the spread of the sampling distribution does or does not depend on the size of the population
IT DOES NOT depend on the size of the population, it depends on the sample size
whats an example that the sampling distribution does not depend on population size, but does depend on sample size?
blood tests & corn
300 lb man vs 120 lb girl, take the same amount of blood to sample.
corn mixed in the farm or in a bag, take the same amount of corn to scoop out for the sample
larger sample size = _______
lower variability
