Acculturation
process of learning and adopting the customs and values of another culture.
attention deficit disorder (ADD)
Students with ADD may have difficulty focusing, following directions, organizing, making transitions, completing tasks, and so on
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Students with ADHD may have may of the same difficulties as students with ADD but many also have difficulty with impulsivity, sitting still, and taking turns.
Autism Spectrum Disorders
these disorders include autism, Asperger’s syndrome, and other persuasive developmental delays (PDD). They have difficulty socializing and communicating.
Behavior Disorder (BD)
Also known as conduct disorder.
Is a type of disruptive behavior disorder in children and adolescents. May violate rules, show aggression toward people or animals, destroy property, or practice deceitfulness.
Cognitive Style
a person’s way of perceiving and remembering information; the way the person thinks or solves problems.
Disposition
A person’s overall approach and temperament when solving problems, learning, and thinking.
English Language Learner (ELL), English as a Second Language (ESL), or Primary Language not English (PLNE)
Their first language is not English. Teachers of bilingual students can support English language acquisition and learning in several important ways, including building on students’ culture, supporting students’ proficiency in their native language, giving students time to learn, and offering opportunities for them to work and talk in small groups.
functional mental retardation (MR)
a child who exhibits difficulties with the following: age-specific activities, communication, daily living activities, and getting along with others.
giftedness
significantly higher than usual ability or aptitude in one or more areas.
