CH 7 Photosynthesis Flashcards
photosynthesis main points
- used by plants, algae, and some bacteria
- transforms light energy into chemical energy
- uses carbon dioxide and water as starting reactants
- produces glucose and oxygen
organisms that use photosynthesis are
- photosynthetic autotrophs and
- the producers for most ecosystems
chloroplasts are
- the site of photosynthesis
- found mostly in the interior cells of leaves
parts of the chloroplast
- thylakoids
- stroma
- grana
chlorophyll
- adds green color to plants
- a light-absorbing pigment that plays a central role in converting solar energy to chemical energy
stomata
tiny pores in leaves
- carbon dioxide enters
- oxygen exits
two steps of photosynthesis
- light reactions
2. calvin cycle
light reactions
convert solar energy into chemical energy
calvin cycle
uses the products of the light reactions to make sugar from carbon dioxide
carbon fixation
the initial incorporation of carbon from the atmosphere into organic compounds
-lowers the amount of carbon in the air
wavelength
the distance between the crests of two adjacent waves
photosynthesis uses wavelengths in the visible spectrum
- wavelengths of light that we see as colors
- plants absorb most colors, but reflect green
fall colors
- the most abundant pigments in plants are usually green chlorophylls
- when leaves are getting ready to fall, the green chlorophylls are removed from the leaves
- pigments that remain are less abundant (red, yellow, orange)
