Ch 7 Lower Extremity A&P Flashcards
Bones that make up the pelvic girdle
Ilium
Ischium
Pubis
Largest, most superior bone in the hip
Landmarks include ASIS & PSIS
Ilium
Lowest posterior part of the hip
“Sit Bone”
Ischium
Lower anterior bone of the hip
Pubis
Forms the socket for the head of the femur
Acetabulum
Obturator foramen is formed by articulation of:
Ischium and Pubis
Largest foramen in the body
Obturator foramen
Flexes and rotates thigh laterally
Psoas major
Flexes and rotates thigh laterally
Iliacus
Extends and rotates thigh laterally
Helps lock knee in extension
Gluteus maximus
Abducts and rotates thigh medially
Gluteus medias
Flexes and abducts thigh at hip joint
Helps lock knee in extension
Tensor fascia latae
Adducts, rotates, and flexes thigh at hip joint
Adductor longus
Adducts, flexes, rotates, and extends thigh at the hip joint
Adductor magnus
External rotation of thigh laterally and abducts
Piriformis
Flexes and adducts thigh
Pectineus
Very large and heavy. Strongest bone in the body.
Head articulates with acetabulum
Articulates with patella and tibia at distal end
Femur
Projection from femur at the side of the hip
Greater trochanter
Develops in the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle
Provides leverage for the quadriceps muscle and protects the knee
Patella
Larger, medial, weight bearing bone of the lower leg
Forms medial malleolus at distal end
Tibia
Attachment site for the patella ligament
Tibial tuberosity
