Ch 7 Flashcards
Definition of chemical change
When the chemical composition of the substance does not remain constant when altered.
- results in CHEMICAL REACTION- when a substance undergoes a chemical change and forms a new substance
Definition of a physical change
When the chemical composition of the substance remains constant when altered
What is the evidence for a chemical reaction
- A gas is produced (bubbles)
- The formation of a precipitate from 2 aqueous solutions
- Change in color
- Change in energy ( exothermic- a reaction that releases heat, endothermic- a reaction that absorbs heat)
What is a chemical equation
Formulas and symbols used to describe a chemical reaction
What is a reactant
The left side of the equation
What are the products
The outcome of the equation
What is a catalyst
A substance that speeds up a reaction without being consumed or permanently altered
What are the 7 diatomic molecules
H2 ,N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2
What is balancing by inspection
The method of placing coefficients while also analyzing each side of an equation.
Definition of a coefficient
A whole number used in front of a substance to balance a chemical equation.
What are the guidelines for balancing a chemical equation
- Before placing coefficients in an equation, verify the formula is correct. Note: subscripts of formulas are never changed
- Balance each element by placing a coefficient in front of each substance.
A. Start with most complex formula
B. Balance polyatomic ions as a single unit
C. The coefficient in an aq must be whole numbers - After balancing the equation check your equation
What are the 5 classifications of chemical reactions
- Combination reaction
- Decomposition reaction
- Single- replacement reaction
- Double- replacement reaction
- Neutralization reaction
Define a combination reaction
Simpler substances being combined into a more complex compound. Also referred to as a synthesis reaction.
A + Z ➡️AZ
Define a decomposition reaction
A single compound is broken down into 2 or more substances.
AZ ➡️ A + Z
Define a single- replacement reaction
A more reactive element displaces another element from a compound or aqueous solution.
A + BZ ➡️ AZ + B
