Ch 6 Flashcards
Define and name the 6 common inorganic compounds
1• binary ionic compound- contains 2 elements, a metal and a non metal.
2• ternary ionic compound- contains 3 elements with at least one metal and one non metal.
3• binary molecular compound- contains 2 elements that are both non-metals
4• aqueous solution- produced when a compound dissolves in water, indicated by (aq)
5• binary acid- an aqueous solution of a compound containing hydrogen and 1 other non metal
6. Ternary oxide- an aqueous solution of a compound containing hydrogen, oxygen and a non metal
What is IUPAC nomenclature
Rules referred to naming chemical compounds
What is a cation
A positive ion
What is a anion
A negative ion
What is a monoatomic ion
A single atom of a metal or non metal with its correct charge
What is a polyatomic ion
A group of atoms bound together havering an overall positive or negative charge
Definition of stock system
A system for naming ionic compounds that designate the variable charge on a metal cation with roman numerals in parentheses.
Ex: iron(II) ion - fe^+3
Define the latin system for naming ions
A system for naming ionic compounds that designates the variable charge on a metal cation with an -ic or - ous suffix
• lower ionic charge -ic
• higher ionic charge -ous
What are the rules for naming polyatomic ions
Oxyanions- contains an element + oxygen
• most have ate suffix
• ones with 1 less oxygen have an ite suffix
• only cyanide and hydroxide end in ide
What does formula unit mean
The charges from a metal and a nonmetal are equal in an ionic compound
Ex: NaCl or CaCl2
