ch 7 Flashcards
episodic memory
memory for specific autobiographical events
semantic memory
memory for facts or general knowledge about the world including general personal info (ex: ur name, ur food)
declarative memory
easy to verbalize or communicate your memory
nondeclarative memory
skill memory and other types of learning that don’t fall under the healing of E+S memory and arent always consciously accessible or easy to verbalize
explicit memory
memories of which the person is aware: you know that you know the info
implicit memory
memory that occurs without the learner’s awareness
levels of processing effect
the more deeply you process new info during encoding, the more likely you’re to remember the info later
transfer appropriate processing effect
retrieval is more likely to be successful if the cues available at recall are similar to those that were available at encoding
free recall
you’re asked an open-ended question and you supply the answer from memory
ex: whats the latin word for arch?
cued recall
involves some kind of prompt or cue to aid recall
ex: whats the latin word for arch? F______
recognition
you pick out the correct answer from a list of possible options
directed forgetting
when info is forgotten on demand
interference
when 2 memories overlap in content, the strength of either or both memories may be reduced
proactive interference
old info can disrupt new learning
retroactive interfernece
new info can disrupt old learning
