Ch. 6 UE orthoses (FOR MSK) Flashcards
T/F Orthoses designed for the UE help either to stabilize/immobilize/restrict or mobilize the arm.
True
T/F Do not pad a pressure area.
True
T/F Use partial contact splinting to avoid excessive pressure at contact points.
False, use total contact splinting
T/F Secure straps in a non-constricting manner.
True
T/F Use thin straps to avoid excessive pressures.
False, wider straps
T/F Use flat straps to avoid excessive pressures.
True
T/F Anchor wrist securely.
True
T/F Straps are pulled away the patient to secure
False, towards patient
T/F Place straps diagonally to avoid contriction
True
T/F Allow for function whenever possible.
True
T/F Free palm for sensory input when possible
True
Common pressure areas seen in a wrist splint include:
- Dorsal MCP with dorsal splints
- Palmar MCP with C-bar splints
- Ulnar head
- Base of thumb MC
- Center of palm wrist cock-up splints
- Base of thenar eminence
- Proximal end of splint
What is an articular splint? Examples?
- cross the joint
Ex: wrist immobilization, elbow, PIP splints
What is a nonarticular splints?
- do not cross the joint
What are static splints?
- Immobilize the part
- Can be articular (wrist splint) or nonarticular
- Place structure in either anatomic position or an appropriate resting posture based on injury or deformity
Why are static splints used?
- Preserve joint alignment
- Decrease spasticity
- Prevent contractures
- Provide pressure to healing scars
What are motion blocking splints?
- Allow for motion in one direction while limiting motion in the opposite direction
Why are motion blocking splints used?
Warranted when restriction is needed in one direction, while still allowing for some function and prevention of tightness overall
What are static progressive splints?
- Allow for gradual elongation of tissues through a prolonged stretch
- Modified as tissue lengthens over time
What are dynamic splints? Composed of what?
- Assist mobilization of the part in the absence of active control
- composed of stable base with elastic or spring-like attachments to assist motor function
T/F Dynamic splints can be combined with motion-blocking elements if limited motion is warranted
True
What type of brace used for humeral fractures?
Static nonarticular stabilizing brace
What type of brace used for carpal tunnel syndrome?
Wrist stabilizing splint in slight extension
Type of brace/braces used for RA vary depending on what? Examples?
- Splints will vary depending on location of synovitis, deformities seen and the protections needed
- ex: swan neck for PIP joint, ulnar drift, wrist stabilizer, ulnar drift with stabilizer
What type of brace used for dequervain’s syndrome?
Thumb spica splint used to rest healing tendons
What type of brace used for scaphoid fracture?
Thumb spica splint to immobilize CMC joint
What type of brace used for Dupuytren’s contracture?
Splint provides palmar pressure and holds the MCPS in extension
When there is injury to the median nerve, what muscles will that effect?
- 1st/2nd lumbricals
- FPL, FPB
- APB
- Oppenens
When there is injury to the ulnar nerve, what muscles will that effect?
- 3rd/4th lumbricals
- Interossei
- Add Pollicis
When there is injury to the radial nerve, what muscles will that effect?
Wrist extensors
What is the purpose of a median nerve splint?
To preserve webspace
What is the purpose of a radial nerve splint?
A dynamic splint to assist in extension but allow for flexion
