What is bereavement?
The state of being sad after an individual you have cared for has passed away
What are Bevearement Centers?
Designed to assist homicide survivors with their loss; some provide financial, social, and legal support
What is Castle Doctrine?
No duty to retreat prior to using force in self-defense if event occurs within or on an individual’s private property
What is Criminal Homicide?
The purposeful, knowing, reckless, or negligent killing of one human being by another
What is Death or Casualty Notification?
The process by which family members of the deceased are notified of their loved one’s passing
What is deliberation?
The act was planned after careful thought
What is eldercide?
Murder of a victim who is 65 years or older
What is an excusable homicide?
Killings that are either unintentional or accidental, whereby guilt is not a factor
What is express malice?
A deliberate intention to unlawfully take away the life of a human being
What is Familicide?
The killing of multiple family members
What is fatality reviews?
Community-based program that seeks to review the circumstances of the homicide to better understand the cause of death
What is felony murder?
The often unintentional killing during the commission of another felony
What is a femicide?
The killing of females by males because they are female
What is Filicide?
The killing of a child by a parent or a caretaker
What is first-degree murder?
Murder committed with deliberate premeditation and malice
What is gender-based violence?
Women and girls are at risk of violence because of their sex
What is a homicide?
The killing of one human being by another
What is an honor killing?
Homicide that is perpetrated by male against female to ensure that honor is maintained
What is an implied/constructive malice?
When death occurs due to negligence rather than intent
What is indirect or secondary homicide victimization?
Experiencing victimization secondhand through witnessing or hearing about victimization directly impacting a family member or friend; people often suffer psychological consequences similar to the victim’s
What is infanticide?
Homicide in which the victim is under 1 year of age
What is Intimate Partner Homicide?
A homicide involving spouses, ex-spouses, persons in current or de facto relationships, boyfriends or girlfriends, or partners in same-sex relationships
What is involuntary/negligent manslaughter?
Death resulting from gross negligence (ignoring the possible danger or potential harm to other people)
What is a justifiable homicide?
Homicide that is judged to be acceptable because it occurs in defense of a life or property
What is a Manslaughter?
The degree of responsibility is less than for murder; however, it is still an unlawful killing
What is a mass murder?
The killing of four or more victims in one location in one incident
What is matricide?
The killing of one’s mother
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD):
Organization that assists homicide survivors; it generally focuses on drunk driving but also provides materials regarding bereavement, finances, and the legal rights of victims and their families
What is parricide?
The murder of one’s parent
What is patricide?
The killing of one’s father
What is premeditation?
The act was considered beforehand
What is second-degree murder?
Murder committed with malice but without premeditation and deliberation
What is a serial murder?
According to U.S. federal law, a series of three or more killings, with at least one occurring in the United States, having common characteristics such as to suggest the reasonable possibility that the crimes were committed by the same actor or actors
What is a spree murder?
The killing of multiple victims at two or more separate locations but with no cooling-off period in between; each event is emotionally connected
What are stand-your-ground laws?
Laws that allow individuals to use force in self-defense without requiring they retreat from their location first
What is voluntary manslaughter?
The intentional infliction of injury that is likely to and actually does cause death
