Ch 6: Cardiorespiratory, Endocrine and Digestive Systems Flashcards
Mediastinum
Heart is contained here
Atrium
Superior (upper) chambers of the heart that gather blood returning to the heart
Ventricle
Inferior (lower) chamber of the heart that pump blood to the body and lungs
Intercalated Discs
Found in the heart. These formations help hold together the muscle cells and allow the heart to beat
Sinoatrial Node (SA) (pacemaker)
Located in the right atrium, this node initiates and electrical signal that allows the heart to beat.
Vasculogenesis
Formation of new capillaries
Angiogenesis
Creation of new capillaries from blood vessels
Valsava Maneuver
Expiring (breathing out) against a closed windpipe. Causes spinal stability, but makes it hard for the heart to pump blood
Diffusion
Getting o2 into the body
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath
Lipolsis
Using fat for energy
Pancreas
Organ in the neck that produces insulin, glucogen and digestive juices
Catecholamines
Hormones for fight or flight responses (stress hormores)
Catabolic hormone
Metabolic process that breaks down molecules into smaller units used for energy
Gluconegensis
Foremation of glucose through non carbohydrate sources (fat and protein)
