CH 6 Flashcards
What are 3 examples of commercial e-collaboration tools on the market?
- WebEx
- Skype
- Zoom
What are the 3 main components of a data communication system?
- Sender and receiver
- A message
- Communication medium (channel)
What are protocols in a data communication system?
- Agreed-on methods and rules that electronic devices used to exchange information
What are 3 advantages of distributed processing?
- Accessing unused processing power
- System is more responsive to user needs
- Most important: ** distributed operations, but centralized control **
What are the 7 layers of OSI model?
- Application layer
- Presentation layer
- Session layer
- Transport layer
- Network layer
- Data link layer
- Physical layer
What are 5 network topologies discussed in the chapter?
- Star topology
- Ring topology
- Bus topology
- Hierarchical topology
- Mesh topology – most reliable because every node is connected to each other. Most secure, but it is costly
What is distributed routing? What is the opposite of distributed routing?
Distributed routing relies on each node to calculate the best possible route. The opposite of this is centralized routing, where one node is in charge of selecting the route. If there is an issue with the route, you would receive an error and the route cannot be completed.
What is convergence in a data communication environment? What are 2 applications of convergence?
Convergence refers to integrating voice, video, and data so that multimedia information can be used for decision making. 2 applications would be e-commerce, and virtual classrooms (Canvas)
