Myers-Briggs Type Theory

A

Based on the work of Carl Jung, and adapted by Katherine Briggs
Jung believed in two psychological types- people who are concerned with the world around them, and people who are concerned with their own views and ideas.

How people observe their world and make decisions

A

Perceiving: Sensing- taking in information using visual and auditory processes, as well as the five senses. Intuition- unconscious and indirect.
Judging: Thinking- analyzing and being objective based on observed event. Feeling- subjective reaction based on one’s values.

Different combinations of perceiving and judging-

A

Knowing if a client is a perceiver or judger help the counselor find a more fitting work environment for the client.

Sensing and thinking: practical and pragmatic, like jobs that analyze facts (law, accounting, business) , and would consult literature and other for choosing a career
Sensing and feeling: make decisions based on feeling. Fitting for social work, teaching, medical care, make decisions based on how they think it will make them feel.
Intuition and feeling: concerned with future possibilities. Make decisions based on hunches, and like teaching, advertising, or social service.
Intuition and thinking: makes decisions based on hunches and future. Enjoy solving problems, fitting for research, computing, and development of new projects

Introverts-perceptions

A

and judgements based on one’s interests and inner world. Extroverts - perceptions and judgements based on outer world.
Judging and perceiving tend to be the most important, and should be considered first when interpreting categorization
Dominant process is the general and auxiliary is the lieutenant. Extraverts’ most important process is the last letter and introverts’ last letter is the second most important. *** I would read over this section on page 152, super confusing

Tertiary and Inferior functions

A

Helps counselor focus on areas to grow.
Counselor can use resources to match client to jobs, and find best work setting.
Counselors rarely use theory without administering the assessment. They are closely welded together.
