What is a Cultural Trait?
material objects shared by a group, such as food and clothing
What is Popular Culture
the widespread behaviors, beliefs, and practices of ordinary people in society at a given point in time
What is Traditional Culture?
composed of long-established behaviors, beliefs, and practices passed down from generation to generation
What is Ethnocentrism?
the tendency of ethnic groups to evaluate other groups according to preconceived idea
What is Cultural Relativism?
the evaluation of a culture solely by its unique standards
What is the cultural iceberg?
it is a metaphor created by geographers to symbolize how we view culture, where the exposed tip is what we see (ex. language, the arts, clothing) but the bigger part of the iceberg is underwater where we cannot see it (ex. beliefs, values, rules)
What is an artifact?
Visible objects and technologies that culture creates (ex. houses, clothing, tools, toys)
What is a mentifact?
the central, enduring element of a culture that reflects its shared beliefs, ideas, values, or knowledge
What is a sociofact?
structures and organizations that influence social behavior, such as families, governments, and educational systems
What is a cultural norm?
the shared standards and patterns that guide the behavior of a group of people; they also uphold tradition and keep traditional culture from changing
What is a gendered space?
When a society had strict roles for men and women, certain spaces may be designed and deliberately incorporated into the landscape to accommodate gender roles
What is a safe space?
spaces of acceptance for people who have been marginalized by society
What is gentrification?
the renovations and improvements conforming to middle class preferences making it more difficult for less affluent residents to continue to live (changing cultural landscape)
What is placemaking?
a community-driven process in which people collaborate to create a place where they can live, work, play, and learn
What is dialect?
a variation of a standard language specific to a general area, it is often distinguished by differences in pronunciation, speed, word choice, and spelling
