Ch 52 Intro to Ecology Flashcards
What is Ecology?
The study of how organisms interact with their environment
What are the FIVE levels of Ecological study? (from small to gratests)
- Organisms
- Population
- Communites
- Ecosystems
- Biosphere
What do researchers see at the Organismal level?
Researchers explore the Morphological, Physiological, and Behavioral adaptations that allow individuals to live in a particular area.
What do researchers see at the Population level?
Researchers focus on how the number and distribution of individuals in a population change over time.
What is a population?
It is a group of individuals of the SAME SPECIES that live in the SAME AREA at the SAME TIME
What is a biological Community?
It consists of populations of different species that interact with one another within a particular area
What do researchers do at the Community level?
study the nature and consequences of the interactions between species and the consequences of those interactions.
What is an Ecosystem?
It consists of all the organisms in a particular region, along with nonliving, or abiotic, components. Biotic and Abiotic
What do researchers do at the Ecosystem level?
They study how nutrients and energy move among and between organisms and the surrounding atmosphere and soil or water
What is a Biosphere?
biologist define it as a thin zone surrounding the Earth where all life exists-the sum of all terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
What is the study of how organisms are distributed geographically
Biogeography
What is Dispersal?
Movement of an individual from its place of birth to the location where it lives and breeds as an adult.
What are ABIOTIC factors?
Non-living, Temperature, Water, soil
What are Biotic factors?
Living, interactions with other organisms
What is The Wallace Line?
It is a biogeographical demarcation.
