Ch. 5 Stereochemistry at Tetrahedral Centers Flashcards
Molecules that are not the same as their mirror images.
Enantiomers
Molecules that do not have a plane of symmetry.
Chiral
Stereoisomers that are not not mirror images.
Diastereomers
Point in a molecule where four different groups are attached to a carbon.
Chirality center.
Property of organic compounds to rotate plane polarized light that passes through it.
Optically active
Optically active substance that rotates the plane of polarization of plane-polarized light in counter clockwise direction
Levorotary
Optically active substance that rotates the plane of polarization of plane-polarized light in a clockwise direction
Dextrorotary
Used to measure the rotation of plane polarized light that has passed through a solution.
Polarimeter
The configuration of a chirality center if the curbed arrow is drawn clockwise.
R- configuration
The configuration of a chirality center if the curbed arrow is drawn counter clockwise.
S- configuration
Exact 3D structure of a chiral molecule
Absolute configuration
Compounds in which two diastereomers differ at only one chirality center but are the same at all others.
