What is secularism? How did Italian city-states become secular in the 14th and 15th century?
Secular means worldly, more specifically away from the church. Italian city-states started trading with each other.
What was the Renaissance?
A period in Europe of rebirth in Greco-Roman ideals; secularism; urban society; humanism
Who is considered to be the foremost example of a “Renaissance Man”? Why?
A great example of a “Renaissance Man” was Leonardo da Vinci; he was a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, and mathematician.
What were the characteristics of a proper Renaissance noble?
They had to have noble blood, character, grace, talent, and a warrior; but also have a classical education and interest in art.
What is humanism?
The belief of the ability of humans to better themselves and their environment; emphasized human ability and potential
What was the Protestant Reformation?
When the 95 Theses were published by Martin Luther, a bunch of people split off from the Catholic Church.
Who began the Reformation? Why?
Martin Luther because he didn’t agree with indulgences (paying the pope to forgive their sins) or some other things the church did.
What factors contributes to the spread of the Reformation?
- the printing press
- support from the German princes
Who was John Calvin? How did his beliefs differ from Martin Luther’s?
Founder of Calvinism; believed in predestination
