Ch 5 Issues in contemporary nursing leadership Flashcards
what are the principles f complexity science that are supposedly addressed in this chapter
complex adaptive systems,
emergence,
unpredictability
reslationships
what is a basic premise of complexity science in relation to solutions to issues
there are no simple solutions to complex problems
is linear cause and effect seen in complexity scienceÉ
what abt right and wrong thinking?
o There isn’t a simple cause or effect in complexity thining
o Complexity theory removes either or and right wrong thinking
what is a complex adaptive system
-the term used to represent the living self-org activity of people and groups of people. humans (people, in groups and in orgs) are living changing, evolving systems. People have interplays between each other. People and groups always try and make sense of the world
how might thoughts and desires influence outcomes in complexity science
o Things aren’t linear or predictable and what we think and want to happen can influence what emerges
how are relationships integral to growth, change etc in complexity science
it is the quality and existence of relationships which affect these things
in hat ways did most distinguish leadership as
something that happens to us and something that each of us participates in.
how do the authors instead want us to think of leadership and our relationship to it
Authors suggest it is not only possible to participate in leadrership but that professional nursing leadership is a shared project in which we partiipcate through words, actions, attitudes, etc
what kinds of leadership were described in the various stories (not sure if we should memorize the terms or not…)
o First kind of leadership described as “crossing the line” – story to exemplify pg 75
o Second way to participate in leadership is to engage with the vision and authority of a designated leader
o Can lead by asking questions – this parks dialogue about possibility + obstables for change – > “What is the issue? what do we need to change to make this better?”
is there a linear relationship between a great leader and being a great manager
o Just because you’re an excellent leader, doesn’t mean you’ll be a great manager (and vice versa) - Leadership is not defined by a label!
what is the leading cause of global disease and illness and yet what do we believe are the solution
poverty is the cause but we are still searching for magic sbullet solution
the presure of research culture is a reflection of what
a reflection of the values placed on contemporary medicine
