Ch 5 - Informing Design Decisions Flashcards
Planned obsolescence
When a product is designed to lat only for a certain amount of time.
(After that it will break and u are forced upgraded, giving more money to the company)
Ethical issues of planned obsolescence
If they only last a certain amount of time, it would be a WASTE OF MATERIALS AND ENERGY making it robust
(E.g. disposable razors made from cheap plastic instead of expensive metal)
Advantage of planned obsolescence (FOR COMPANIES)
new trends, new discoveries are inevitable, so having short lasting products ensures that if there was a new discovery, they can adapt and start making newer, better products
Design for maintenance
When a product is designed in a way, that its parts can be repaired, therefore increasing the longevity of the product
Ethics and environment that companies have to take into account
With consumers becoming more aware of environmental issues, companies have to ensure and advertise that they are closely monitoring their social and ecological footprints
