Ch 4 - Production Techniques And Systems Flashcards
How does automation help
Production lines flow more easily and less human interaction. Cheaper to operate
Product data management (PDM)
A central storage space for all data, and can be updated live and accessed by all employees to ensure a smooth manufacturing process with LESS MISTAKES
Computer aided design (CAD)
Designing of new products using specialist software
Advantage of CAD
design can be easily created and also manipulated and altered and thoroughly tested before the final making
Can be worked on simultaneously by several employees/designers
Designs can be rendered to look realistic
Computer aided manufacture (CAM)
The manufacture of products using machines and automation e.g. laser cutters
Disadvantage of CAD
Complex to learn
Expensive software
Security risk (cyber attacks etc.)
Advantage of CAM
faster
Accurate
Machines can run 24/7
Can work directly from CAD files
Disadvantages of CAM
Expensive set up cost
Training cost and time
Specialist engineers for maintenance
Leads to unemployment becuase people can do the same jib
What type of product are Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) used for
Used for trending, short lasting items which are only popular for a short amount of time
What is FMS (flexible manufacturing system)
Series of machines which are adaptable and are used in production lines where changes in the market happen on a regular basis
Advantage of FMS
Machines are easily recalibrated/reprogrammed for new purpose (makes suitable for batch production)
Allows great flexibility in manufacture
Lean Manufacturing
Japanese method created by Toyota. Tries to eliminate waste, overburden and bottlenecks
Just in time manufacturing (JIT)
The process of ordering materials only when they are required. Agrees with the ideas of lean manufacturing
Advantages of just in time (JIT)
Less storage, because materials are ordered and then used straight away
Less waste material and overproduction
Decreases chance of product defects
Makes manufacture flexible, since if something goes out of fashion, you can also change quickly since you can order new materials when needed
Disadvantages of JIT
Relies on high quality and fast deliveries, which can sometimes be delayed
Risk of running out of stock
If the supply chain breaks, so does production
