Infectious Agent
Microorganism capable of producing infection
Immunity
Immunity is built when the body develops antibodies to infection
Is the oral cavity sterile in utero?
Yes
Cross contamination
The spread of organisms from one source to another: person to person or person to inanimate object to person
Standard precautions
Standard of care that protects you and patient from spread of pathogens (should be implemented with every patient)
The two major standard precautions
Hand washing and disinfection
Transmission based precautions
Droplet, contact, airborne, sharps
Chain of events for transmission
Infectious agent, reservoir, port of exit, mode of transmission, port of entry, susceptible host
Aerosols
Can be solid or liquid and is suspended in the air. Spatter can be visible because it is bigger in size
Viral hepatitis
Inflammation of liver: can lead to cirrhosis or failure
Human Herpes Virus (HHV)
Can be found in periodontal pockets, will not treat pt with active herpetic lesion
Herpes Labialis
Cold sores found on vermillion boarder of lips
Herpetic Whitlow
Enters skin abrasions near fingernails
Ocular herpes
Found on eyes and can lead to blindness
What is HHV3
Varicella-zoster virus or chicken pox
Are hygienists legally and ethically required to treat HIV/AIDS patients?
