What is the scope of practice determined by?

Direct supervision
The dentist must be present
Personal supervision
The dentist must authorize, be present and check work before dismissal of patient
General supervision
Dentist has authorized tx but need not be present when tx is being carried out. Dentists diagnosis and tx plan
Direct access supervision
Hygienist can provide appropriate services without authorization. Usually limited to preventative care
Collaborative practice
Hygienist may practice without supervision under an agreement with a dentist
Indirect supervision
The dentist must authorize procedure and be in office when it is being carried out
Remote supervision
Dentist is not on site, communication is implemented through current technology
Independent practice
Hygienist can preform any services within scope of hygiene practice without supervision or authorization from a dentist
Primary preventative service
Measures carried out before disease occurs to prevent disease or injury
Secondary preventative services
Tx of early disease to prevent further progression that can lead to extensive rehabilitation
Tertiary preventative services
Methods to prevent lost tissues and to rehabilitate oral cavity so that it is functional
Dental hygiene specialties
General dentistry, perio, ortho, pedo
Alternative practice settings
Nursing home facilities, free clinics, public health setting, can only be done by mid level providers
Process of care
Framework in which individual needs are met: assess, diagnose, plan, implement, evaluation, documentation
Assessment
Combination of subjective (how the pt feels) and objective (facts). Perio charting, medical history and xrays are apart of assessment
Diagnosis
Deciding what the pt needs (prophy, pm, srp)
Plan
Care plan is informed consent! What the pt needs and how frequently
Implementation
Carry out what pt needs
Evaluation
This phase determines if specific areas need to be treated again, if pt needs to be referred, if they can be put on regular schedule of continuing care
Documentation
Documentation of diagnosis, plan, implementation, etc
