Ch. 5 Flashcards
What is ARPANET?
Advanced Research Projects Agency Network
What is the Internet?
- An interconnected network of networks
- A network of networks, across the planet
What is a packet?
Data sent over the internet
What is a hub?
Connects other devices to the network and sends packets to all devices connect to it
What is a bridge?
Connects two networks together and filters packets
What are switches?
Connects multiple devices and filters packets based upon destinations
What is a router?
Receives and analyzes packets, then sends to specific destinations
What is internet protocol (IP) address?
Unique number that identifies a device
What is a domain name?
Common name for a website so you don’t have to remember the IP address
What is a Domain Name System (DNS)?
Translates domain names to IP address
What is packet-switching?
How packets travel across a network, through routers. Multiple packets may be broken up and sent to different routes.
What is a protocol?
Set of rules that allow devices to exchange information
Who were the primary interest users in the 1980’s?
Government, academic, and research organizations
What is the National Science Foundation (NSP)?
Managed the Internet until early 1990’s and restricted commercial ventures. The NSF later transferred control to the US government in 1991
What is web 1.0?
- Web pages
- Not interactive
- People find and view information but don’t interact with it
-It is readable but with flat data. There is limited interaction between sites and web users. It is an information portal where users passively receive information without being given the opportunity to post reviews, comments, and feedback.
What is web 2.0?
-Users can communicate with web sites and each other like Youtube, Wiki, Flickr, and Facebook
- It is writable with interactive data.
- Encourages participation, collaboration, and information sharing.
What is web 3.0?
- A semantic web that refers to the future.
- Computers can interpret information like humans and intelligently generate and distribute useful content to the needs of users
What is WWW?
Web servers with HTML pages that are viewed on devices with Web browsers
What is the average home broadband speed?
Between 3 mbps and 30 mbps
What is intranet?
Within the organization
What is extranet?
Allowing partners into your network for specific things (ex. supply chain management)
What is a data farm?
The process of using a high performance computer or computing grid to run a simulation thousands or millions of times across a large parameter and value space.
