Consciousness
Awareness of our external and internal environments.
Unconscious
Freudian: Thoughts, desires, emotions out of awareness.
Medical: Interrupted consciousness due to conditions or trauma.
Subconscious Awareness
Activity just beneath the surface of awareness.
Uncontrolled Awareness
Daydreaming, automatic processing.
Controlled Awareness
Focused conscious attention.
Physical Recuperation
Hormonal cycles during sleep; body functions with sleep deprivation
Mental Recuperation
Poor performance and slowed learning when sleep-deprived.
Polygraph Use
Measures electrical activity in the brain and body.
EEG
Measures brain waves (Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta).
Stage 1+2
Transition between wakefulness and sleep, some Theta activity.
Theta activity with Sleep Spindles and K complexes.
stage 3+4
Slow-wave sleep, Delta activity.
REM Sleep
Beta and Theta activity, dreams, muscular paralysis.
Sleep Cycles
Alternation between REM and non-REM sleep 4-6 times per night, 90-minute cycles.
Circadian Rhythms
Daily cycles of sleep and wakefulness, usually cued by environmental stimuli.
Basic-Rest-Activity Cycle (BRAC)
90-minute cycle regulating bodily activities and REM/non-REM sleep.
