ch 5 Flashcards
what’s a buffer
a solution that resists any change in PH due to an acid base pair
what’s an acid base pair
its a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate false or weak base and its conjugate acid
what do weak acids or bases do in water
partially dissociate
how does a weak acid buffer work?
the non-dissociated acid will donate H+ ions if OH- ions are added to the solution, producing water and conjugate base, and the dissociated conjugate base will react with any H+ ions added to the solution by turning back into the weak acid
what buffer capacity
the maximum number of hydrogen ions a buffer solution can neutralise
how does a weak base buffer work?
the non-dissociated base will donate OH- ions if H+ ions are added to the solution, producing water and conjugate acid, and the dissociated conjugate acid will react with any OH- ions added to the solution by turning back into the weak base
why does a buffer have a buffer capacity?
if too much of an acid or base is added to a solution, the buffer will run out of ions or weak acid/base to react with thus overwhelming the buffer and turning the solution acidic or basic
