Ch 49: Sensory Flashcards
Another name for the sense of taste is…
gustatory
What are the three categories of Normal Sensation.
- Reception
- Perception
- Reaction
Define “Reception”
Stimulation of a receptor such as light, touch, or sound
Define “Perception”
Integration and interpretation of stimuli
Define “Reaction”
Only the most important stimuli will elicit a reaction
What are the 6 most common VISUAL sensory deficits?
- Presbyopia
- Cataract
- Dry eyes
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Macular degeneration
What is presbyopia?
Can’t see close objects clearly
What is a cataract?
Cloudy or opaque areas in part or all of the lens that interfere w/ passage of light through lens causing glare and blurred vision.
What is glaucoma?
Abnormally high pressure in the eye that damages the optic nerve and causes decreased visual acuity, difficulty adapting to darkness, halo effects around lights and even blindness
What is diabetic retinopathy?
Changes that occur in the blood vessels of the retinua resulting in decreased vision or vison loss due to hemorrhage and macular edema
What are some signs of. macular degneration?
- bluring of reading matter
- distorion/loss of central vision
- distortion of vertical lines
What are 2 hearing deficits?
- Presbycusis - gradual rolling off of high freqs
- Cerumen accumuation
What is/describe Xerostomia.
- It is a taste deficit
- Decrease in salivary production leads to thicker mucus in mouth that inhibits taste and leads to appetite and nutritional problems
What is peripheral neuropathy?
numbness and tingling of the affected area (in extremities) and stumbling gate
Define Sensory Deficit
- Deficit in the normal function of sensory reception and perception
- The effected sense just doesn’t function properly
